June 24th "Installation" Meeting
A big happy birthday goes out to past President Lion Todd. We miss you in the den, but we know that you're busy and your work is a great undertaking. No other birthdays or anniversaries, so we moved on to the Lion Song lead by Song Leader Doctor I. R. Curry.

Tomorrow, (Thursday, June 25th), Lions will be getting together in our meeting room to stuff the packages for the runners participating in the Freedom 5K Race. (www.freedom5k.com). We started several years ago with only a few hundred people in the race. As of today, 1,025 have pre-registered for the race. We'll need help stuffing the packages and also on the morning of race day, (Saturday, July 4th) at 6:30AM when people start to show up for registration. Based on previous years, we could see as many as an additional 500 showing up race day!

The first board of directors meeting of the incoming administration will be next week, July 1st, at Lock 16 on Cable Road. Meeting starts at 12:00 noon, and usually people show up at 11:30A for lunch.

PP Lion Lynda reported that there were 10 recipients of service for eye care, down slightly, but some of the bills and reports have not yet come in. It's expected that this year will end up about the same as last year with the total number of people served for eye care.

Lion Jack, (seen here in December of 2006 ringing the bells for the Salvation Army), has been in St. Ritas in serious condition. He could not make this evenings Installation Meeting.

Yesterday, (June 23rd), Lions Larry, Carol, Jim, and Dean, awarded Lion Jack the Melvin Jones Fellowship honor in his hospital room.

The fellowship, which was created in 1973, takes its name from the founder of Lions Clubs International (LCI), Melvin Jones. It is an honor, not an award. The fellowship was established as LCIF's highest form of recognition to acknowledge an individual's dedication to humanitarian service. Nobody can think of a more deserving person than Lion Jack. He was a Lion who always had a smile when you entered the den, a quick quip when you showed up after being away for an extended time, and although having to use a walker he made it to regular meetings, board meetings, and Lions events. Lion Jack is what signifies Lionism. He serves, and is dedicated. Again, congratulations to Lion Jack Blackburn!
Also receiving an Melvin Jones Fellowship was Lion Carol Swords. Lion Carol has been a past president, secretary, and has been a Lion for over 40 years. It was because of her devotion to the Lions Club that PDG Larry, her husband, became a Lion.

Lion Ed Eichler and wife Lisa attended tonight's Installation, and Lion Ed was awarded the club's highest honor, the Dick Clark Service Award. Ed has been a leader in the The Starlight Club, and has devoted countless hours. Ed and Lisa live in Van Wert, Ohio, and Ed works for The Lima News.

At the meeting, Lion Fred was awarded a new Lion for the pride. This one is even more scary than the last one! You better watch out! The Tailtwister has a new apprentice.

We had two drawings tonight. The first was for a $50.00 Meijer gift card, and our winner was PDG Lion Larry. Accepting on his behalf was Lion Carol who promised that she would pick up some pool supplies so Larry has something to do this weekend. Our second winner was none other that Lion Paul Nutter, who performed the Induction Ceremony. Paul is a Associate Professor in the Department of Technological Studies at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. Paul won $10.00 in the 50/50 drawing. NEXT WEEK is the BIG drawing. B-There!

PROGRAM

Our program was the Induction Ceremony which ended with the passing of the gavel from Lion Lynda to King Lion Dean.

Lion Dean is Assistant Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima, Ohio. During an interview for their employee newsletter, "In Step", Dean was asked what his favorite part of the job is.

“Working with a great staff who care, and seeing people with disabilities walk and be able to return to work and most importantly get reunited with their family”, said Dean.

Lion Dean joked about his nomination to the presidency of the club being, "a game of tag, and I'm it." Dean when on to say that he learned a lot in the past few months about Lionism from Lion Jack, and also from other members of the club that took the time to work with him on projects such as White Cane Day.

Lion Dean's first board of director's meeting will be in less than one week. He, an his cabinet of officers, invite all Lions to make this club the biggest and best there is. And he reminded members that this is the 89th year of the Lima Host Lions Club, so next year will be a milestone in club history.
