Honorary Lion June Miller will be celebrating her birthday on our next meeting day, June 10. Would be nice if she could join us. If you would like to send her a card, her address is 601 S. Turner, Lima, OH 45804
Also Lion Joyce and Dick Roop recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and Lion Mary and Emad Shenouda are celebrating their 8th.
We will be doing Blood Sugar testing Saturday, June 6 from 9 to 11 at the Andersons. Lion Joyce is going to be there from 9 to 11 and Lion Dean is taking the 11 to 1 shift.
Both of them need someone to help them. All you need to do is ask people to have the test and help them fill out the application. If you can help, please contact Lion Larry at 419 225-7417.
Lions Ron, Lynda, Carol and Larry will be helping the Lions of District F at the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield in Dublin on the 6th.
Installation Banquet will be held June 24 starting at 5:30 at Milano Café. Please get your reservations in to incoming President Lion Dean before the 15th. You can reach Lion Dean at 419 657-6079 or 419 226-9258. We would like to have a really great turnout to start the 89th anniversary year of the Lima Host Lions.
We will be doing roadway cleanup starting at 9:00 A.M. on May 30th. We will meet behind Union Bank on American Avenue. This is usually don’t in about 2 hours or less and the more help we have, the faster it goes. If you can help, take it to the bank.
The efforts to raise funds for the Ohio State School for the Blind Band to go to Pasadena is going well and we have some local residents who are helping out, thanks to Lion Dean’s flyer that was handed out to some at the White Cane Day. This is a great opportunity for these kids and also great exposure to show what the sight impaired can do. I don’t know if they will be marching in close proximity to the Lions Clubs International float, but I am sure it will have some benefit to Lions also. Our club donated $1000 to this fund raiser and if you would like to contribute you can make out your tax deductible check to Ohio Lions Foundation and mark OSSB Band on the memo line.
We also need all Lions and friends possible to help out with the Freedom 5K run. We will be packing the bibs on June 25 from 2 to 4 and having pre registration pick up at the Pavilion in Faurot Park on June 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. Date of the race (July 4) we need help with registration, traffic control and miscellaneous at various times. If you can help, please call Lion Larry at 419 225-7417.
PROGRAM
Program Chair person Lion Lynda introduced Josephine Kosmalski and Amy Rodde from SAFY (Safe Alternative for Family and Youth).
SAFY is basically a foster parent organization with emphasis on helping children in many areas where they may be having problems. Foster parenting is not the only option for some of these children, but it is needed in many cases. They try to match the Foster parent and child as to compatibility and interests but some of the programs they have are outside of the foster parenting program and may have children who are having trouble in school or having behavioral problems at home.
Some of the help they give is through the use of Safe Harbor, a place where kids can stay who may just need a break from the every day rigors of life. They can stay there for up to 21 days and receive help to solve whatever problems is causing conflict. They also receive help with medical and psychological problems.
The development and happiness of the child is the major concern and do be able for them to feel safe and secure helps immensely.
Since May is Foster Care Awareness Month this was a very timely and informative program.

Lion Dean told us about White Cane Day, which netted so far $447, not counting change. By a three to one margin, people donated more on at the west side Walmart store.
Installation is now set for June 24th at 5:30PM at the Milano Café. Remember, no noon meeting. Guests are welcomed, and cost of the meal is $10.00.
Lion Ron has set the road cleanup for May 30th, starting at 9:30AM.
PDG Lion Larry says that we'll be at Muirfield Village Golf Club for the big golf match. Lions will be helping with domestic services. This will be Wednesday, June 3rd. We need some Lions to help out.
HISTORY
From a past Growler, June 29, 1938, an announcement was made for the club to sponsor activities for Big Brothers for children's skating in Allen County. Also, everyone knows who John Herbert Dillinger (June 22, 1903 – July 22, 1934) was. But did you know that he killed a Lions member. Sheriff Jess L. Sarber was shot and killed when several members of the Dillinger Gang attempted to break John Dillinger out of the Allen County Jail. Jess was a member of the Lima Host Lions Club.
PROGRAM
Dr. Rick Cheney is a past W.R. "Dick" Bryan Fellowship Award holder, and graduate from Lima Senior (class 1970), and the Ohio State University (class 1978).
Rick spoke to us about some of the issues involved in the eye care, and his work performed with the Lions Clubs in the area.
Rick sees a lot of people in practice that are needy. To receive care paid for and donated by Lions, one must prove hardship. This is the part which a lot of people don't understand. They think it's free, but the services provided by Lions and Dr. Cheney are donated when the applicant can prove they have no other means to get tests and care.
Rick said that typically someone should get their eyesight checked every two years. This is especially appropriate when someone hits age sixty to sixty-five.
Diabetes is the number one cause of most eye problems. Unfortunately, glaucoma is not always detected early enough for people to avoid its ravages. Once sight has been destroyed, it cannot be restored. Each year the disease is responsible for 15% of all new cases of adult blindness in the United States. Only cataracts and macular degeneration account for more.
