The Starlight Club went to the Ohio School for the Blind. The school caters to students K to 12, and up to age 22. Some of the participants come from as far away as Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. A textbook for a blind student may cost as much as $20,000. The Ohio School for the Blind is sponsored by the Lions Club. The school graduates as many as 150 students per year.
November 12th will be Spouse's Day. If you don't have a spouse, feel free to bring your significant other. Please let Lion Larry know if you plan to attend.
The Optomist's Club sent us a letter on the Toy Drive, which is Nov. 12th to Dec 12th. We're giving this some thought and will talk with Lion Todd about it.
Mary Shenouda was inducted into the Lima Host Lions Club. Mary works with Dr John Pajka Ophthalmologist, located at 855 W Market St, in Lima. Web site is www.pajkaeyecenter.com. It's great to have someone from the eye field in our club so we can get a better understanding of the needs and the technologies available today. Mary was referred to the Lions by Jennifer Schwartz.
PROGRAM
The program was the induction of Lion Mary Shenouda. After Lion Larry spoke about the history of the Lions, Mary told us about some of the things that Dr. Pajka has been doing in the eye care field.Dr. Pajka has led numerous humanitarian surgical eye missions to developing countries, including Nicaragua, El Salvador, Haiti, Uzbekistan, Honduras, Guatemala, Bolivia, and Costa Rica.
He and his teams have donated their time and resources to work with local eye surgeons, providing free cataract surgery and care to people who otherwise would remain sightless.
He has helped in the training of eye surgeons in these countries. In fact, he helped organize the Eye Hospital in Managua,Nicaragua. He has also helped teach visiting eye surgeons from Uzbekistan and Nicaragua.

We sang Happy Birthday to both Mark Miller and Ed Eichler, and we were actually pretty close to being on key. There were no anniversaries, nor any other date of note. God knows we tried to find something else to sing about.
The Flower Sale sheet went around. Pickup was to be October 23rd to the 25th at Roman J Claproods.
The Starlight Club met last week, and 37 members planned on going to the Ohio School for the Blind.
The Road Committee reported that 7 Lions were in attendance to clean American Avenue and Arthur Avenue. It was reported that they collected 13 bags of trash.
Lion Lynda reported that we needed to get a committee together and audit the club's books. She would like that to be completed in the next 30 days.
Lion Larry brought in something real interesting. A gentleman met Larry and gave him this bell anonymously. It turns out that the bell was borrowed by the Bluffton Lion's Club in 1967, and is presumably the original 88-year-old club bell. It was custom back then to borrow a club item and hold it for ransom, forcing some club members who lost their item to visit the club that took the item, thus making a visitation.
From what we can piece together, the bell was taken in 1967. It remained with the club until 1976. At that time it went home with a member. When that member died this year, the heirs to the estate found our bell and returned it.
Perhaps we should have made that visitation sooner?
Lion Tom Keller has left the club due to a job transfer. He's now in charge of The Andersons at 3725 Williston Rd in Northwood. If you are ever up in the SE corner of Toledo, stop in and say HI to Tom
The big 50/50 drawing netted Lion Larry $10, and Lion Dean $27.00!
Our program today was on the Lima Public Library and the technologies they have available to assist with content for the blind.

MEETING - August 27, 2008
Dr. John Moats and his wife Joanne were in the den today. We had a good meeting, but missed some of our Lion members.
The Zone 7 sight committee met, and had thirty-seven requests, and twenty-eight approvals. Care was issued to fifteen people. $2,005 was spent, and we now have balance $700.
Blood sugar testing will be September 6th, Saturday, at The Andersons on Elm Street at the American Mall, from 9AM to 1PM. We have two shifts that need to be filled with two people each.
The Starlight Club will meet Friday, August 29th at the Eagles. Phil Christy has a new job and is unable to provide transportation. We could use a few more drivers if you have a chance.
GOLF OUTING
Lion Barry reported that the Lions Golf Outing will be held September 10th at Tamerac Golf Course with a 12:30 start. Cost is $23.00 for 18 holes of golf, and includes the pizza and door prizes. To sign up, contact Lion Barry at 419-228-8835 during the day. If you don't want to go golfing, at least join us in the Side Room. Remember, NO MEETING ON THE 10TH!
FUTURE PROGRAMS
One final note, Lion Ed needs some help with programs. Please contact him if you can provide a program for the club. Keep in mind that we now only meet twice a month, so you need only arrange for two programs.
PROGRAM
PDG Larry Swords introduced Joanne and District Governor John Moats.
DG John Moats is a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He has served 2 years with the U.S Public Health Service - Division of Indian Health as a general practice physician for the Apache Indians at Whiteriver, Arizona. He then joined the Bryan Medical Group where he practiced Family Medicine / Anesthesiology for 40 years, retiring on Dec. 31, 2003. He was also Williams County Coroner for 30 years.
John has 3 children, 4 grandchildren, and 1 stepson with 2 step grandchildren. He was married to his second wife, Joanne in 2004 following the death of his first wife of 38 years in 1997. His current hobbies / activities include traveling, gardening and lawn care, model railroading, member of Williams County Habitat for Humanity, Member of Wesley Methodist Church, a member of the missions committee and leader for 3 mission work trips to New Orleans.
Gov Moats spoke about every Lion being an "everyday hero". He has talked with numerous Lions around the world and is amazed at what clubs and individuals do. He echoed what PDG Larry has said, and that is we need to keep and get new members. The number of members in many Ohio clubs has been dropping, and this may force us into consolidating our districts so we can keep numbers high. We may go from ten districts in Ohio to only five. Work is still being done to keep this from happening. If this goes through, both Springfield and Marysville will become a part of our district.
Gov. Moats also spoke about "The Good" program, which was started by a school teacher who is blind. The Good Program is for school kids, 4th to 6th grade, whom have been identified by teachers as going through hard times, yet keeping their grades up and the spirit high!
Gov. Moats also spoke about the district convention, which will be held in Archbold, Ohio. It will be March 22nd at the Heritage Inn, at Sauder Village. All Lions are welcomed to attend. See PDG Larry for more details.
Where in the world is The Growler?
Welcome back to the newsletter. I'm sorry that the newsletter has not gone out in a while. Work has forced me to miss a lot of Lion activities, among other things. I could sure use some help to keep the newsletter going. If I am not at a meeting I would appreciate it if someone could take notes and send them to me in e-mail. I can cut and paste it to the newsletter for printing and mailing and posting to the web, which would be better than not putting in anything at all. I can be contacted by e-mail at fred08 (at) vobbe.com or at my work address of w8hdu (at) wlio.com. Either one works. - Lion Fred.
Ice Cream for 2008

Disability Day
For the September 24th meeting the Lions visited St. Rita’s Medical Center to share lunch during Disability Day. The Lion’s sponsored the lunch for this occasion where members of the community come to find out what it is like to live with a disability for a couple of hours. Members from the community are assigned disabilities such as paraplegia, hemiplegia, blindness or deafness and then have to negotiate a course around the St. Rita’s campus as a person with a disability. The participants learn what its like to get in and out of a car, to use the bath room or to simply get up a hill in a wheel chair. At the lunch everyone had the chance to interact with people who live with their disabilities. It was very interesting to hear how people deal with disabilities on a day to day basis.
Board Meeting Actions
At the September meeting it was approved to spend $150 for meals for "Disabilities Day" at St Ritas.
We're still debating about Eddie Eyeglasses, and have tried to contact him. We have some problems in the past with "Eddie" so we're not sure if we're going to continue to use him.
A note from the Milano Café indicates that they would like to raise the meal to $7.75. We're checking into changing the menu from a full meal to soup and sandwich to cut the cost down.
The Starlight Club will be visiting the Ohio School for the Blind in Columbus on October 12th.
"Fall Conference" will be at the University Plaza in Columbus OH on November 2nd.
November 12th will be guest and spouse day in the den.
Late word in on the Road Cleanup, according to Lion Ron McNutt, Larry and Carol Swords, Queen Lion Lynda, Dean Rallof, Corrine Piper, Dave Staley and Doctor Ron were in attendance this past Saturday on American Avenue.
