Annual Flower Sales 2009
I hope everyone is having a great day despite the gloomy weather. A great chance to sell flowers though don't you think. Something to brighten everyone's day.

Since I found at the Board meeting not everyone has gotten a sales pack from Lion Todd...Here is some important information that will allow you to sell flowers without the packet.

First - the Flowers are $11.00 a dozen and they will be delivered in a long stemmed flower box. If anyone asks the Lion's get 50% of the $11.00 and all the money the Lions collect goes to community programs including support of the Star Light Club, Free Glucose Testing, Free Vision Testing and Glasses as well as support for school programs. Feel free to gloat a little when you speak with folks.

Second - Collecting Money: Tis better to collect up front then from the back end. Take down the persons name and where they would like the flowers to be delivered. Keep this list handy so you know where to take the flowers after you pick them up. If someone would like a receipt and you do not have the packet take down their name and address and let Dean know and we will make sure we get them one.

Third - Flower Pick-up: Claproods will be furnishing the flowers again this year. Their address is 910 Industry Avenue, just off of Kibby Street. The building look like a ware house not a flower shop so you may drive by it the first time scratching your head like I did. The pick-up dates are October 29,30 and 31. If you sell so many you need help with distribution just let us know and we can help.

If you have further questions let Todd or I know, and have a roaring good day.

October 2009 Board Minutes
Approval of Minutes: There were no minutes to approve.

Old Business

Membership Committee Report – New Member Goal 2009 – 2010: Since there has been some delays to getting a finished brochure the board agreed to move the membership recruitment meeting to October 28th to give time for the letters to go out and to complete the telephone calls. Bill Stolly presented the Potential New Member List to the board. The board members present divvied up the calls amongst themselves. King Lion Dean was asked to develop a brief script to follow when making the telephone calls. Lion Dean will get the script out to participating Lions next week.

The copies will be completed Friday October 9th or Monday October 12th. Lion Mary will contact Lion Bill when the brochures are ready to be sent out. The Lions would like to thank Lion Mary and Lion Julie for putting together a great brochure.

The school is excited to work with us but is having difficulty scheduling the event. Lion Dean and Lion Paul will attend this meeting.

New Business

Lions Quest in the Schools: Lion Dean informed the board that he will be identifying a school official to discuss the Lion’s Quest Program.

September 23rd Meeting
Happy Birthday to Lion Corrine, who enjoyed our rendition of "Happy Birthday to You".

The brochure is ready for printing and those that were interested could review it via laptop. Looks nice and we should have it ready to be enclosed with the letter to those on our new member list. The meeting is set for October 14 at 7 at Milano Cafe'.

If you have any member suggestions, please get in touch with Lion Bill Stolly ASAP. The more we have to contact, the greater our chances for a good attendance.

Lion Barry gave a review of the golf outing. Not a great number of participants, but everyone who golfed and attended the party afterward had a good time. Thanks to Lion Barry for organizing this. He did a great job as usual.

Lion President Dean, Lion Carol, and PDG Larry attended the joint Zones 7 & 8 meeting in Arcadia on the 17th. The zone 8 clubs had 49 in attendance and unfortunately the Lima Host Lions were the only zone 7 attendees. The renovations made to the Arcadia Community Building, (which essentially is the Lions Building), is really nice, and they are continuing with a new roof and siding. Lions Clubs are busy in their communities and are all seeking members and looking for ways to make their home areas better places to live.

Lion Todd gave out the flower packets for our annual Fall Flower Sale. Let's all get out there and sell, sell, sell! We have a lot of service commitments and many whom are counting on us to assist them. We need several things to help us. One is more members, and the other is more funds raised. We use to sell thousands of dozens of roses and, while I don't think we can expect to get back to the old numbers, we can do better than we have been doing. Thanks to Lion Dr. Bob, Lion Paul and others that have sold many dozen in the past. We all need to give it our best shot.

50/50
Lion Corrine was the 50/50 $10 drawing.
Lion Carol won the quarterly drawing for $78.

Program

Anna Miller of the West Ohio Food Bank was introduced by Program Chair Lion Ron. She has been with the Bank for 6 years, and like most other service agencies in the area is seeing a greater need for their services.

The weekly number of people being assisted in any given week is approximately 8,900. Wow! That's a lot of service. The Food Bank supplies 67% of the food used by pantries, 44% used by Kitchens and 56% of food used by shelters.

Many of the clients they serve have to chose between food and other necessities. The warmer months make it a little easier for some, but many can't eat and pay rent too. While some receive other government assistance also, too many have to go without basic needs and their health care needs are not being addressed either.

They are doing great work and utilizing their resources to the limit. They have been giving food away, as we have seen and read in the news, because the sometimes have more than they have room to store. They are seeking new facilities that would increase their storage area and need over $300K for a downpayment on what they want and would take another $300K each year to operate it.

Thanks to Anna and her coworkers at the West Ohio Food Bank a part of the needs of some of our neighbors are being met.

Special thanks to Lion Larry for taking the minutes of the meeting as Lion Fred was roped into a last minute business meeting.
